On March 31 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President José Manuel Barroso of European Commission in Brussels.

Xi Jinping stressed, in the era of economic globalization, China and the EU have become a community of common destiny with their interests highly integrated. Win-win cooperation is the key to promoting the China-EU relations. The two sides should firmly seize the opportunities for cooperation created by the two courses of China’s development and Europe’s economic recovery, focus on implementing the “China-EU 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation”, turn the current pattern of cooperation which takes trade as the major driving force into a new one that is more comprehensive, robust, high-end and driven by multiple engines. China and the EU should respect each other’s choice of development path and social system, strengthen dialogues and exchanges on reform and other aspects, enhance mutual understanding and trust, and always adhere to the principles of mutual respect, equality, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and win-win cooperation in China-EU cooperation. The two sides should jointly manage and control economic and trade problems by sticking to equal dialogue and friendly consultation, so as to refrain the sparks of trade frictions from burning out and boost the fire of prospering development. Hope that the EU will keep its market open, take a cautious approach to launching trade remedy measures, and properly manage and control trade frictions. The two sides should also promote cooperation in international affairs and work together to push forward the building of just, reasonable and effective international rules.

Barroso said that the EU-China relations are of strategic and prospective significance and enjoy sound development momentum. The EU appreciates China’s support to Europe during its difficult times, supports China’s development and prosperity, cares about China’s reform and opening-up initiatives, and is willing to be China’s all-round strategic partner. The EU hopes to raise the trade and investment level by taking the opportunity of the negotiations on EU-China investment and free trade agreements under the guidance of the “EU-China 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation”. It also hopes to combine the advantages of both sides to expand cooperation in the fields of urbanization, innovation and people-to-people and cultural engagement, and to properly resolve trade frictions in wireless communications equipment and others through negotiations.
