On March 9, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held telephone talks with Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato' Sri Anifah on the loss of contact of a Malaysia Airlines flight.

Wang Yi said, the Malaysia Airlines flight has lost contact for nearly 40 hours. The Chinese government highly concerns about it and the Chinese people are very worried. President Xi Jinping made special instructions on the accident and Premier Li Keqiang held emergent telephone talks with Prime Minister Najib Razak yesterday. Time means life, and every minute now counts. The Chinese side requires the Malaysian side to keep trying every effort in the search and rescue work and informing the Chinese side every progress. We will never give up and will keep trying as long as there is any glimpse of hope. China’s rescue vessels are heading towards relevant waters successively. We hope the Malaysian side could provide assistance and coordination.

Dato' Sri Anifah said the Malaysian side is sparing no effort to conduct search and rescue work and will keep close communication and coordination with the Chinese side.

Wang Yi as well held telephone talks with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on the same day, asking the Vietnamese side to assist the Chinese side for search and rescue work.
