Li Keqiang Holds Talks with Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar

Li Keqiang stresses to deepen relations and cooperation between China and Trinidad and Tobago and advance development of China-Caribbean relations during talks with Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar

On the afternoon of February 25, 2014, Premier Li Keqiang held talks with Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar at the Great Hall of the People.

Li Keqiang said that Trinidad and Tobago is an important cooperative partner of China in the Caribbean region. Since the establishment of diplomatic relationship 40 years ago, the two countries have made fruitful achievements in exchanges and cooperation in fields such as politics, economy and trade, and culture, as well as supported and coordinated with each other in international affairs. Last year, President Xi Jinping paid a successful visit to Trinidad and Tobago, which vigorously promoted the development of bilateral relations. China is ready to work together with Trinidad and Tobago to further close exchanges, consolidate mutual trust and deepen cooperation, so as to continuously advance the bilateral relations to new levels.

Li Keqiang expressed that Trinidad and Tobago is the largest economy in the English-speaking Caribbean region, and cooperation between China and Trinidad and Tobago enjoys broad prospects. He hoped that the two sides will, in a focused and gradual manner, broaden and consolidate cooperation in fields with advantages so as to bring benefits to the two peoples. The two sides should push forward cooperation in infrastructure construction and they, on the basis of well building livelihood projects such as hospitals, should exploit operational projects with large-scale such as ports and docks as well as industrial parks, in order to better realize mutual benefits and win-win results. The two countries should strengthen energy cooperation, expand direct trade in natural gas, establish a long-term and stable cooperative partnership, and jointly produce high value-added and new energy products. Both sides should expand cooperation in the security area. The Chinese government supports China's competent enterprises to join in the construction of the National Emergency Management Center in Trinidad and Tobago. The equipment, such as ships, made by China enjoys a good international reputation for the high quality. China is willing to conduct relevant cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago. Both sides should deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges and strengthen cooperation in fields such as culture, sanitation, sports and tourism.

Li Keqiang said that in recent years the Caribbean countries have sought self-strength through unity with the integration process achieving positive progress, and the relations between China and the Caribbean countries have made substantial development. China is willing to join the efforts with the Caribbean countries including Trinidad and Tobago, and take advantages of the overall cooperation mechanism between China and Latin America to drive the in-depth development of cooperation between China and Caribbean in politics, economy and trade, and other fields, thus making the bilateral cooperation greater and broader.

Bissessar said that Trinidad and Tobago shares a long history of friendly exchanges with China, and the two peoples enjoy a profound friendship. Trinidad and Tobago appreciates China's great assistance to its economic and social development, and is willing to constantly expand practical cooperation with China in infrastructure construction, energy resources, tourism and other fields, and enhance the coordination in international and regional affairs, thus playing a positive role in deepening Caribbean and Latin American countries' relations with China, and promoting common development of both sides.

Following the talks, Li Keqiang and Bissessar jointly witnessed the signing of documents on bilateral cooperation between China and Trinidad and Tobago in energy resources, sanitation, sports, aviation and other fields.

Prior to the talks, Li Keqiang held a welcoming ceremony for Bissessar at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Luo Fuhe, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and others were present.
