Executive Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui Lodges Solemn Representations to the US Side over US President Obama's Meeting with the Dalai Lama

2014-02-22 14:53

On the evening of February 21, 2014, Executive Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui urgently summoned Daniel J. Kritenbrink, Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the US Embassy in China and lodged solemn representations over US President Barack Obama's insisting on meeting with the Dalai Lama in disregard of China's strong opposition.

Zhang Yesui said that this erroneous act of the US side has grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, reneged on its commitment of not supporting "Tibet independence", severely violated the basic norms governing international relations and caused grave damages to China-US relations. China expresses strong indignation and firm opposition to that.

Zhang Yesui said that Tibet is a sacred and inalienable part of China. Tibet-related affairs fall entirely within the internal affairs of China, which allow no interference of the United States. The contradictions between the Chinese side and the Dalai Lama are neither an ethnic or religious issue nor a human rights issue, but a major principled issue of safeguarding China's national unity and opposing separation. China firmly opposes to the practice of any foreign country giving green light to the Dalai Lama's visit and resolutely opposes to any form of any national political heavyweights' meeting with the Dalai Lama. No one can shake the will and resolve of the Chinese government and people to combat outside interference and defend national sovereignty and unity.

Zhang Yesui said that the US side on one hand acknowledges Tibet as a part of China and claims not supporting "Tibet independence", but on the other hand arranges its leaders to meet with the Dalai Lama, the head of the "Tibet independence" separatist group. The US side's insistence on doing this will severely impair China-US cooperation and the relations between the two countries, and will surely harm the interests of the United States itself as well.

Zhang Yesui said that respecting each other's core interests and major concerns is the key to ensure the healthy and stable development of China-US relations. We strongly urge the US side to take China's solemn position seriously, abide by the commitment of recognizing Tibet as a part of China and opposing "Tibet independence", take practical actions immediately to eliminate adverse effects, stop using Tibet-related issues to interfere in China's internal affairs, and stop conniving at and supporting the anti-China separatist activities of the Dalai clique. The US side must take concrete actions to win the trust of the Chinese government and the Chinese people.
