Wang Yi Expounds on China’s Position on Situation of South China Sea

2014-02-14 14:30

On February 14, 2014, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expounded on China’s principal view and policy on South China Sea during his talks with visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Wang Yi said, firstly, the situation in South China Sea is overall stable. China is able and confident to work with ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries to continue to well safeguard the peace in the region.

Secondly, the freedom and safety of navigation in the South China Sea was, is and will always be out of question. All countries have the legitimate rights for free navigation in the South China Sea.

Thirdly, China and ASEAN countries are committed to the comprehensive and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and strengthening the practical maritime cooperation, so as to advance the smooth progress of the negotiation on the "Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC)” accordingly.

Fourthly, China has ample historical and legal evidence for its sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters. The existing disputes now were caused by some countries' illegal occupation of some of the islands and reefs of China's Nansha Islands since the 1970s. Despite of this, China has always been committed to solving relevant disputes through negotiations and consultations in a peaceful manner with countries directly concerned.

Wang Yi said that recently, some people in the international community spread unfounded and untrue rumors to complicate and exaggerate the disputes in the South China Sea and to artificially create tensions in the region. The Chinese side can not accept and firmly opposes to such acts.
