Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Ming Visits Tunisia

On January 9 and 10, 2014, Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Ming visited Tunisia, met respectively with Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, National Constituent Assembly Speaker Mustapha Ben Jafar, Prime Minister Ali Larayedh of the Tunisian interim government and Prime Minister-designate Mehdi Jomaa, and held talks with Foreign Minister Othman Jarandi. Both sides mainly exchanged views on China-Tunisia relations and international and regional issues of common concern. During his visit, Zhang Ming also attended the reception held by the Embassy in Tunisia to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Tunisia.

Zhang Ming said, since the establishment of the diplomatic ties between China and Tunisia 50 years ago, the bilateral relations have been developing healthily and steadily with cooperation in various areas yielding fruitful results. Although international situations and Tunisia’s domestic situation have undergone great changes, the friendship between the two countries remains unchanged. China appreciates Tunisia’s efforts to push forward a political transition and carry out economic construction. Under the new situation, China is willing to further strengthen friendly exchanges with Tunisia at all levels, tap potential for bilateral cooperation and continue to promote the level of China-Tunisia friendly cooperation.

The Tunisian side welcomed the Chinese delegation’s visit during this critical period of transition and thanked China for offering assistance after Tunisia’s changes, and stressed that developing cooperation with China is the common choice of all political forces in Tunisia, and that Tunisia is ready to make joint efforts with China to promote the bilateral relations toward a strategic partnership.
