Wen Jiabao: Arm Sales Embargo against China Is a Legacy of the Cold War

2004-12-11 00:00

On the night of December 7, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council indicated that arm sales embargo against China is a legacy of the Cold War. It does not conform to the reality to continue to implement this embargo.

Premier Wen accepted a short interview by the media before attending the China-EU Think Tank Roundtable Conference, taking questions from the press on the topics to be discussed at the China-EU Leaders' Meeting.

Wen said China's stance on lifting arm sales embargo is consistent. To demand the lifting of arms sales embargo does not mean that China would like to buy advanced weapons from Europe. Rather, it is aimed to oppose political discrimination against China.

When talking about how to develop China-EU relations, he said the key to the development of China-EU relations is mutual trust and understanding. The two sides share broad consensus. As long as the two sides stick to mutual respect and trust, bilateral relations will surely witness continuous promotion and development.

Wen said the China-EU Leaders' Meeting is extremely important. During the meeting, the two sides will discuss specific measures to push forward further development of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.

Wen arrived in the Hague on the night of the December 7. The 7th China-EU Leaders' Meeting will take place on the following day there.
