Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Meets with WHO Director-General Nominee

On May 9, 2003, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Dr. Jong Wook Lee, Nominee for the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General.

Foreign Minister Li gave a detailed briefing on China's work on prevention and control of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and spoke highly of the WHO's role in promoting the health of the human race. The Chinese government appreciated the WHO for upholding the One China principle and the country would continue to support the organization's work.

Dr. Lee highly commended the measures China has adopted to prevent and control SARS disease and expressed his satisfaction with the WHO's cooperation with China. Dr. Lee reiterated that he and the organization will continue to adhere to the One China policy. Dr. Lee also promised that he would dedicate himself to promoting the cooperation between the WHO and China when he assumes office.
